Sparkle blog for you Queens today!
Let’s talk, Sponsors!
We all know pageants are NOT cheap! It’s an expensive hobby for sure. So many gowns, so much wardrobe, all the training, and travel.
It’s not cheap, so wether on a state level or national level we all try and obtain sponsors to help ease that financial burden. It also comes with the positive aspects of getting out in the community and bringing more exposure to yourself and the brand.
Win-Win for all right? You help them get more exposure while they help you lessen that financial burden and get more active in your community. Win-Win.
Well, a win for the SPARKLE girl BUT it’s only a win for the Sponsor IF the contestant meets their expectations of the ”gift they generously gave.”
Personally, I never reached out for sponsors (besides my work) until I was carrying a state title and headed to nationals. I saved them for when I needed them most. I didn’t want to overextend the generosity or take the chance they say yes and then when I needed them most, they tell me sorry. To each is own girls, but something to think about.
Also, girls, it’s worth asking IF you need at both levels! Just be honest and upfront if you’re hoping to continue their sponsorship if you were to win for both a state and national. If you wanted to go that route, hey double bonus!
SPARKLE GIRLS ASK! You will never know unless you ask! The worst they can say is No, right?
I will be doing a PART 2 of this blog next week on: “Reasons WHY you should obtain Sponsors and Tips on getting them!”
Make sure to watch for this next week. It will help your Sparkle Journey tremendously!
Remember girls; A sponsor relationship can be a WIN for you, them, and the brand! IF all expectations are met.
So, let’s talk about Sponsor Expectations!
As a business owner myself, I understand realistic expectations on what I would expect in return for either my monetary or product donation.
It’s pretty simple girls it’s called:
RATE OF RETURN
Rate of return on THEIR INVESTMENT!
It’s numbers and dollar signs!
In marketing, a healthy rate of return is 5:1! This should be your goal!
An average and acceptable, meaning you did your job at least for them as a Sparkle Queen is 3:1.
If that sponsor received NO rate of Investment, not one future contestant or new business transaction/sale from their donation to YOU that year, most likely they will not be back for YOU or the brand.
This is not science, this is not a surprise, it’s business statistics.
Businesses can’t just throw money out the door they need a rate of return on their investment. You’re not a 501C3 for them to write off in their books. They are looking for a marketing return; you’re like a SPARKLY SHINY WALKING BILLBOARD, this is a great way to look at it!
As a titleholder and or a receiver of their product or service it’s YOUR job to SPARKLE and SHINE so others SEE IT and WANT the same product or service, bringing them their ROI.
Keep in mind, it also depends on the service as well and the dollar amount of the product or service that’s donated.
Say you have a car dealership donate an annual lease or monetary gift, well realistically your not going to sell 3-5 cars for them let’s be real here. BUT figure out that donation number and times it by 3-5 and you can easily average a return for them by cost of appearances you can do or signing at their dealership events, etc that would average their expense and ROI from you to them.
Now say you get a hair sponsor small or big. I’ve had this before, whether it’s expensive hair extensions or a hair service for the year. That sponsor is still looking for an ROI. You can easily market to get them 3-5 future contestants to use their services as they prepare to compete that next year. It doesn’t even have to be a future SPARKLE contestant either, it could be a girl you meet at an appearance or a friend you already have that see how much you like their product or service and YOU refer them.
It’s easier than it sounds, trust me, SPARKLE QUEENS!
Think about it…
What’s the easiest way to give a sponsor their return? Marketing via SOCIAL MEDIA, girls!
Nowadays you don’t Have to be a marketing guru to be a marketing specialist, it’s so simple by just a tag or a hashtag, it’s that easy girls!
Not only once girls too with one picture of their product or service but consistently throughout the year! Unless your a super bowl ad, you need to consistently put it out there for more views to greater your chance for their ROI.
I mention this before in a different blog, but it’s also crucial that you watch your marketing etiquette when it comes to sponsors. Don’t insult them by promoting a competitor or a competing product.
That’s a marketing No-No!
That’s a for sure way on how NOT to gain their investment back or most importantly their respect. For instance, if you have a makeup artist, clothing brand, a photographer, a car, whatever the product or service is be considerate and respectful NOT to promote another of the same product or service throughout the year. This also goes for monetary donations, say for example you have a real estate company give you a financial gift to cover some of your expenses you wouldn’t be promoting another or hunting for another real estate company as a sponsor.
As a SPARKLE girl, I also understand what it’s like to have a title with TONS of sponsors and well a Title with like None!
If your that QUEEN that won a title and the sponsor package, we’ll is pretty much non-existent don’t complain as your preparing for nationals as if you didn’t “get anything.” Oh hearing this always drive me nuts in my mind, thank goodness my thoughts weren’t rolling across my forehead when I would here this in the past. YOU got that title and YOU received that opportunity right? And I’m sure there’s a least a few girls if not dozens that would gladly step into your place if your unhappy!
Instead of thinking of it as negative, more significantly think of it from a different aspect. Most likely that director is expecting YOU to GROW that package for the next girl, and most likely those judges chose you because they thought, or maybe you led them to believe you would and could, am I right? Lol So, get to it girl! Make your Sister Queens experience even better than yours!
If you are the Queen that won a state title and received a fantastic prize package, you my Sister need to get to work too! Every one of them is expecting an ROI.
Me, I always made this a priority because I would feel horrible taking something for free without giving them a proper thank you or return they expect. That’s promoting, marketing, and it’s easier than we think, so at least try. When you tag them or show up for their appearances girls that’s working. You’re doing your SPARKLY job!
Having SEVERAL state titles in the past AND a national/international title I speak from experience when I say the BRAND or SYSTEM also has expectations from you in this category!
Along with your duties as a state or national titleholder, you also have the unwritten expectation for not just recruiting more contestants but sponsors! It’s marketing girls, no matter what system, it IS A BUSINESS, this IS marketing, and your reign should be their most significant advertising return of investment.
For example, there wasn’t one state title that I did not bring SEVERAL YEARLY new sponsors to the brand, even my national and international title.
For instance, I’ve brought lash extensions and botox/fillers for the next year’s winners for their entire reign. I’ve brought hair extensions as a one time prize; I also brought products as contestant giveaways for each of the contestants. Heck, most of the businesses I paired a brand with are STILL with the system as a consistent sponsor every year to this day! This is an excellent ROI I brought to their brands and it also speaks silently that the sponsor is also getting their ROI in return yearly. This is a job well done I feel.
So IF your a state contestant and your national experience is over because let’s face it most of us QUEENS use the time before nationals preparing for nationals. Now that nationals is over your job isn’t, you have more time now to market the brand. Something to think about if you want to compete again as well… After nationals don’t just throw in the towel, get to work ladies this doesn’t go unnoticed by the directors, the staff, your current sponsors, other systems, and most importantly your SPARKLE sisters.
Also DONT FORGET SPARKLE QUEENS:
YOU DIDN’T GET THERE ON YOUR OWN!
Thank Them! Say you won a state title, and you received interview coaching, a hair consultation, a gown, a makeup artist, what have you even if it’s one appointment… They helped you in some way. Thank them! If you place or didn’t, Thank them! This is what they are looking for, your their advertisement at nationals, give them the proper marketing credit they generously donated for.
If your a SPARKLE girl reading this, I hope this helped clarify a little more on sponsorship expectations in some way.
Wether, your a SPARKLE girl, signed up for next year and looking for a way to ease that financial burden, or a current QUEEN with more time left in her reign, I hope this helps you SPARKLE a little brighter when your marketing yourself, that Crown, and that Sponsor!
I hope you check back next week on Part 2 of this Sponsor topic on:
Reasons WHY you should obtain Sponsors and Tips on getting them!
Happy Thursday, Mom Queens!
